Douglas Fir cladding is considered a sustainable building material. Harvested from well-managed forests, and responsible forestry practices help ensure the long-term viability of this resource. Using Douglas Fir cladding can contribute to environmentally friendly construction practices.

When used as cladding, Douglas fir kiln-dried boards provide a natural and warm aesthetic to the building’s exterior. The wood has a beautiful reddish-brown colour with prominent grain patterns, adding visual interest and character to the structure. It is commonly used for both residential and commercial projects, including homes, cabins, and commercial buildings.

Description

Douglas Fir Timber Cladding HalfLap Hidden Fix T&G boards refers to the use of Douglas Fir timber as an exterior covering or finishing material for buildings. Douglas Fir is a popular choice for cladding due to its natural beauty, durability, and structural strength.

Douglas Fir Timber cladding is very well suited for cladding as it is very strong and versatile it will not mark and dent easily compared to other softwood species. It has a high resin content so will be able to withstand many years of harsh weather. When freshly cut it bears a pink colour that changes to a Reddish brown and as is the case with almost all timber it will slowly change to a silver grey colour when exposed to the weather.

Douglas fir cladding is not easy to treat due to the density and high resin content; however, we believe it looks best left to age to a silver grey colour giving it a traditional timeless look. There are however oils on the market that are suitable to treat the timber to help preserve the beautiful natural colours.

  1. Appearance: Douglas Fir has a reddish-brown to yellow-brown heartwood with a pale yellow sapwood. It has a straight grain pattern with occasional knots. The texture is medium to coarse, and the wood has a natural lustre.
  2. Density: The density of Douglas Fir varies depending on the specific variety and growing conditions. On average, it has a density of about 480 kg/m³ (30 lb/ft³), which makes it a moderately heavy and dense softwood.
